When you walk into one of Lizzie’s classes, there are a couple things you may not know about her. The first is: she’s an engineer, the second is: she’s a rocker – like she’s really into rock music. Seems a bit ironic? Well, somehow the combination meshes flawlessly. Lizzie blends her book smarts with her energizing, hardcore tunes and always produces an amazing class that leaves you feeling de-stressed and ready to tackle the world. We chatted with Lizzie about a few other interesting topics, see her answers below.
Name: Lizzie Hammerman
Hometown: San Francisco
Word on the street is you have a pretty serious “day-time” job, what is it that you do, exactly?
I am an engineer for a pharmaceutical company. I design and develop processes to make prescription drugs. In other words, I figure out how to make 1 million capsules per day, or hour, or minute, or whatever the patients need. Right now I am working on inhalable powders for people with lung diseases like Cystic Fibrosis.
So what made you want to pursue a second career in fitness?
It takes a long time to develop product (a decade or so if it even makes it to market). I love the immediate impact I can have on clients’ lives at uforia. They come into a Revolutions or uDefine class carrying the stress from the day with them and leave within an hour as a happier, healthier, more balanced person.
What makes your uDefine classes different from others?
I love to use the TRX in my class. It is one of the most amazing versatile, functional training tools out there. It can be used to train everyone from elite athletes to people rehabilitating from injuries. My class is very hands-on and I love to provide personal attention to everyone in the room.
We hear you’re a pretty great spin teacher, so what is your favorite part of teaching a cycle program like Revolutions?
I love working with new clients who are apprehensive about indoor cycling or maybe had a negative experience in a previous spin class and turning them into Revolutions enthusiasts. I love showing people that they can have fun and get an amazing workout in a Revolutions class.
How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle?
My workouts are not just about burning calories and staying strong. More importantly to me, they provide an amazing stress relief and are a great way to focus on myself and decompress after a stressful day at work.
We all need a little cheat-cheat from time to time, so what’s your favorite indulgence?
Anything sweet! I am a sucker for chocolate. At least it has antioxidants 🙂
What are three things that people may not know about you or would be surprised to learn about you?
1. I played horse polo in college.
2. I have been taking group exercise classes since I was 13 (I started with Step aerobics). That doesn’t even count the Jane Fonda videos I did at home at an even younger age…wearing a leotard, leg warmers, and headband.
3. I hated my first indoor cycle class. 12 years later, I am not only still taking cycle classes, but I now teach them too!
When you have a day off, we could most likely find you: On my bike out on the road. Or if the weather is crummy, maybe the mall.
